This week, LEGO kick off their second year of LEGO Dimensions, featuring new Level, Fun and Story packs featuring characters from Ghostbusters, Mission Impossible, Harry Potter, Adventure Time and the A-Team.  Since Disney’s own toys to life game, Disney Infinity closed down earlier this year, many fans have been asking the team behind the game about the addition of Disney, Marvel and Star Wars characters to the game.

Mark Warburton recently spoke with Eurogamer at EGX about the latest additions to the game and when asked about Disney coming to the game:

“We talk to them all the time – Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens is out there, we just released new Lego Marvel DLC.  With my Lego Dimensions hat on?  We have two different streams on the go – Dimensions is one, then we have our Marvel game and Star Wars… We’re happy with the trajectory of Lego Dimensions.”

It doesn’t sound like anything is happening too soon as they are continuing on with their three year plan for the game.  Also as part of the recent promotional tour, Arthur Parsons from TTGames also spoke with GamesBeat about the recent closure of Disney Infinity and how it effected LEGO Dimensions.

GamesBeat: Do you feel like the sector is in need of a morale boost after Disney’s exit?

Parsons: As a developer I was more sad than anything else, yeah. A lot of people there lost their jobs. It’s an unfortunate part of the business. But for us, our plans weren’t affected. We had a three-year plan with Lego Dimensions. We’re just carrying on doing what we were going to do.

GamesBeat: Do you have anybody in Salt Lake, where Disney was?

Parsons: No, we’re all based in the U.K., except for our Warner Bros. contingent in Burbank. We couldn’t really absorb any of those people, which is a shame. We’re always on the lookout for talented people.

LEGO Dimensions does offer extra opportunities, for some franchises and characters like A-Team or Gremlins, that wouldn’t be suitable for a full LEGO game.  Which could tie in very nicely with Disney characters in the future, adding in Disney characters like Stitch, Jack Skellington or Gravity Falls.  But it looks like we will have to wait a little longer for any content coming to the game.

Arthur Parsons also confirmed that the TT Fusion team, who are based in Wilmsford, who had recently made the Lego Star Wars: Force Awakens game are now using one of their smaller teams to help the TT Games team on the Lego Batman Movie story pack, which is coming out in early 2017.

Our Take:

LEGO Dimensions had always said there was a three year plan and creating new content with Disney characters will take some time, plus they will have had deals with other companies for year two and three, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see characters coming in late 2017 or 2018.  I’m also interested to know what the team are working on, such as new Marvel or Star Wars solo LEGO game?  With LEGO and Disney working together for many years, it isn’t going to be a surprise to see anything announced.

Would you like to see Disney characters in LEGO Dimensions?
